WHK Gym survives scare to win 1-0 against Prolific SC

…DTS, Baller Boys settle for a 0-0 draw

As World Cup fever spread across the world, the MTC HopSol Youth League games were no exception, with young players taking to the field this past weekend.

The U/19 boys were in action at the Trustco United football field, where Windhoek Gymnasium edged Prolific Soccer Club 1-0.

The game was fairly slow-paced, with few goal-scoring opportunities for either side in both halves, but luck smiled on Gymnasium when a failed clearance from Prolific’s goalkeeper struck one of his defenders and ended up in the back of the net for an own goal.

The cold weather over the weekend perhaps affected the players, with little individual brilliance on display from either side.

Prolific were also forced to play with only 10 men after some players failed to report for duty.

Coach Sylvester Murangi of Windhoek Gymnasium felt the game was heavily affected by the cold front that swept across the country over the weekend.

It’s very cold, and we have a lot of injuries in our team. We got that one lucky goal, and we stuck with it. We created a lot of chances, which we did not utilise, but Prolific were good at the back, with the goalkeeper saving as well as the centre back,

– he said.

Murangi felt his side performed better in the second half, creating a few opportunities that unfortunately went begging.

We are pleased with the three points we collected today, but this season we are doing great because we have only lost one match since the start of the league. I believe that, in the next two weeks, our injured players will recover, and then we will have our full squad again. Then you will be able to see a game with high tempo and not see this type of slow-paced game with a lot of mistakes,

– he added.

Coach Clarence Kavaendje of Prolific SC felt the goal was unfortunate for his side but fortunate for their opponents.

I would like to call the game an even match because they went a long way to exploit. Unfortunately, our team attendance was poor today, with only 10 men present from start to finish. I must say I am impressed with the work they put in for the day,

– he shared.

Well done to our defenders as well. They were quite committed to keeping the goals out because we wanted to play towards a draw. The game was somewhat slow. During the second half, my boys wanted to get in a bit more, but nonetheless, it is still a result we can build on and work from. We just need to make sure all our players attend training and show up on match day,

– he added.

Elsewhere

Deutscher Turn und Sportverein’s (DTS) U/17 were involved in a battle to prevent Baller Boys from taking all three points as the two sides played to a goalless draw at the same venue.

Baller Boys were on the attack from the outset, with DTS struggling to create meaningful chances in front of goal.

DTS’s goalkeeper was undoubtedly the man of the match, producing a string of brilliant saves to deny Baller Boys throughout the encounter.

Coach Ricardo Hifitikeko from DTS admitted that his side lacked the urgency they are known for and praised his goalkeeper for securing them a point.

I don’t know if it’s the winter or the flu that is going around for our performance today. We did not play to our full potential, but I feel we could have done better. Baller Boys is not an easy opponent. They have very good players, their number 10 was very good, and I was impressed with the way he dictated the game,

– noted Hifitikeko.

Our goalkeeper saved us with countless brilliant saves between the sticks, and he kept us in the game. In the second half, I could see some players’ body language, and you could see they were not giving you what you wanted, so I took them off, and we started rotating the ball better. We started fighting for each ball, and everyone was in the game, but it was not the best display that I could have asked for, and as they say, we go back to the drawing board,

– he remarked.
